Arsenal, Chelsea-linked Brentford star available for £65m in January

Despite facing an eight-month suspension in May due to numerous betting violations, the English footballer is expected to be a highly sought-after player in the upcoming winter transfer market. Before his suspension, Toney had an impressive record of 32 goals in 68 games for Brentford in the Premier League, helping the team establish itself as a top-half side. Last season, he scored 20 goals in 33 matches, finishing third in the Golden Boot race behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Toney’s suspension won’t be lifted until January, but he has been allowed to train with Thomas Frank’s team after serving half of his eight-month ban. His contract with Brentford runs until the summer of 2025, but Frank has acknowledged that he may leave for the right price. The club initially held out for around £80 million for his transfer, with Arsenal and Chelsea both expressing interest.

However, recent reports suggest that Brentford is now willing to lower their asking price to £65 million as Toney’s contract will enter its final year in 2024. Toney appears open to exploring new opportunities, and Arsenal could offer him Champions League football if they qualify for the knockout rounds. Arsenal currently has Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah competing for the starting striker position, but Jesus has been dealing with fitness issues, including a recent hamstring problem.

On the other hand, Chelsea may not provide European competition but could have the financial means to strike a deal with Brentford. Chelsea has made several signings this summer, and Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly looking for more attacking reinforcements in the winter. The Blues are also keeping an eye on Victor Osimhen’s situation at Napoli, but with Osimhen facing a month-long absence due to a hamstring injury, they may prioritize their pursuit of Toney when the transfer window reopens.
