Jermaine Jenas, the former Newcastle United player and TNT Sports pundit, has emphasized the potential weakness in the Magpies’ squad due to injuries and a lack of depth, as they aim to compete in multiple competitions this season. Newcastle is currently in contention for four trophies, with their progress in the League Cup and the UEFA Champions League, where they are third in their group, alongside their Premier League and FA Cup endeavors.
Speaking before Newcastle’s upcoming Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+, Jenas praised his former club’s performance but expressed concerns about injuries. He pointed out the injury-prone nature of players like Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, highlighting the team’s vulnerability. However, he noted positive contributions from players like Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, who have added depth to the squad.
Jenas suggested that the lack of squad depth could potentially be their downfall, especially after their recent 1-0 defeat against Dortmund, which left them in third place in a challenging Group F alongside Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan. Jenas was impressed with Dortmund’s performance and noted that the loss was unexpected. He recommended that Newcastle should aim for a point in their away game against Dortmund and then focus on their return fixture against PSG.
Despite his concerns about depth, Jenas acknowledged the talent and unity within the team, citing their recent 3-0 victory over Manchester United with a second-string squad. However, the defeat to Dortmund left a sense of disappointment and uncertainty about their future in the competition.
