The Falcons have experienced a trend of assistant coaches and coordinators leaving Atlanta to pursue head coaching positions. Notably, Kyle Shanahan, who orchestrated one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses in 2016, is now based in San Francisco. Matt LaFleur and Mike McDaniel, who were part of the 2016 staff, have ascended to prominent roles in Green Bay and Miami, respectively. The latest potential candidate for a head coaching position is Ryan Nielsen, Atlanta’s defensive coordinator, identified by ESPN’s Dan Graziano as having the potential for such a role due to his strong performance this season.
Despite the recent challenges posed by the Grady Jarrett injury, the Falcons’ investment in their defensive unit, led by Nielsen, has yielded positive results, with the defense ranking quietly among the top 10 in various metrics. However, it is doubted that Nielsen will attract significant attention in the current hiring cycle, given the high demand for other coordinators such as the Lions’ Ben Johnson, the Bengals’ Brian Callahan, the Texans’ Bobby Slowik, and the Eagles’ Brian Johnson. Established coordinators with previous head coaching experience, like Dan Quinn, also contribute to the competitive landscape.
While Nielsen may receive interest in head coaching interviews in the coming years, it is anticipated that he will remain with the Falcons at least until 2024, and possibly even through 2025, providing reassurance to Falcons fans about the continuity of leadership on the defensive side.
