21-years-old time is now as USMNT injuries open door

In the upcoming international break, the United States men’s national team, led by Gregg Berhalter, will engage in their first competitive matches. The USMNT is set to face Trinidad and Tobago in a two-legged tie, including a visit to the Caribbean. Notably, the team will have to navigate these matches without the presence of Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah. Folarin Balogun is anticipated to take the lead in goal-scoring, but the focus shifts to the midfield, specifically on Gio Reyna, in terms of orchestrating the ball delivery.

Reyna, a young midfielder who has faced challenges in securing playing time at Borussia Dortmund, has showcased excellence in his appearances for the national team. Despite limited minutes and injury setbacks, he has contributed six senior goals and three assists in 22 appearances, with most of his impact observed in friendly matches. However, in competitive fixtures, especially in Nations League matches, Reyna has only managed one goal and three assists. With Weah and Pulisic absent from the squad, this presents a prime opportunity for the 20-year-old midfielder.

Report: Gio Reyna could miss the start of the new season

During the previous international window against Germany and Ghana, Reyna appeared to reconcile with Berhalter. The current window provides another chance for him to not only secure a spot in the starting XI but also emphasize his role at the center of the pitch, crucial for initiating attacks.

Reyna’s ability to identify and execute passes before space closes down, coupled with his impressive on-the-ball skills, makes him a standout player. In the recent window, his defensive work rate has also shone, marking his evolution into a well-rounded midfielder. The overarching goal for the team is clear: defeat Trinidad and Tobago to secure a place in Copa America while defending the Concacaf Nations League title.

The absence of star attackers adds complexity to this goal, but it is an opportunity for Reyna and the depth of the USMNT to shine. Reyna is not only vying for a consistent role in the national team but is also positioning himself for a potential move during the January transfer window to secure regular playing time.

Other young players, such as Kevin Pardes and Alex Zendejas, have opportunities to step up, especially in filling the gaps at winger positions. However, their performance may depend on Reyna’s pivotal role in the midfield to distribute the ball effectively.

Gregg Berhalter acknowledges Reyna’s significant role in the upcoming matches but emphasizes that the extent of his minutes and impact lies in Reyna’s hands. As Reyna matures as a player, even limited playing time could contribute to securing victories over Trinidad and bolstering his role and confidence for the future.

The potential starting XI includes Matt Turner, Sergino Dest, Chris Richards, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, Brenden Aaronson, Alex Zendejas, and Folarin Balogun.
