The Spanish coach initiated his managerial journey in Spain before spending six years coaching in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. His recent appointment by Rangers occurred just three weeks ago. Despite QPR’s ongoing search for a director of football since Les Ferdinand’s departure five months ago, with the imminent reopening of the transfer window on January 1, Cifuentes is determined to assess the current Rangers squad before making any decisions.
Expressing his desire to offer the existing players an opportunity to showcase their abilities, Cifuentes aims to steer the team clear of the relegation zone, following Gareth Ainsworth’s troubled tenure. While acknowledging the potential in the squad, he hinted at possible additions to enhance the team’s strength.
In his words, “I have been here only four weeks, and the first step as a manager is to make sure we are confident with the guys here and see what they can do. It is a fresh start for everybody, and in my eyes, there is quality in the squad, but it is about getting the best out of the players.”
Although open to evaluating options during the transfer window, Cifuentes emphasized the importance of understanding the club’s context to develop a strategic approach to player recruitment. While recognizing the availability of talented footballers globally, he stressed the primary focus on the English market. However, he remained open to exploring opportunities elsewhere.
Cifuentes noted, “If there is an opportunity, and I can help the recruitment department attract some players, then why not. I have always said that it is important to have the right balance not only in the style of player and their profile but their personalities.”
Acknowledging the diversity in playing styles, he highlighted the need for a thoughtful approach, considering factors such as technical abilities and preferred playing styles. Cifuentes concluded by expressing anticipation for the future and the developments it might bring.
