The Washington Commanders brought in head coach Ron Rivera in 2020 with the aim of stabilizing the organization and establishing a winning foundation. However, with new ownership now in charge, Rivera’s tenure with the Commanders is reportedly coming to an end.
Rivera’s inaugural season as head coach saw Washington achieve a 7-9 record and make it to the NFL playoffs, providing a positive outlook for the struggling franchise. Unfortunately, the Commanders have not returned to the postseason since then and are on track for their worst season in several years.
Despite opportunities to make changes to his coaching staff, including the dismissal of offensive coordinator Scott Turner and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Rivera’s time in Washington has not seen a significant turnaround. Recent reports suggest that, while the Commanders are unlikely to dismiss Rivera mid-season, there is a belief within the organization that he has “done enough” to finish out the current year but may not be retained as head coach for the 2024 season.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has indicated that there is a possibility of Washington bringing in a new general manager. The decision to fire Del Rio reportedly came from Rivera himself after a disappointing Thanksgiving Day loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and there was no ownership mandate for the change.
Looking ahead, even though the Commanders’ coaching search has not officially begun, Eric Bieniemy, who took over as offensive coordinator, is seen as a credible candidate for the head coaching position. Bieniemy’s impact is evident in quarterback Sam Howell’s performance in the team’s offensive system during his first year.
With a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the potential arrival of a new general manager could lead to strategic moves to strengthen the team’s secondary and offensive line, aiming to create a more well-rounded and competitive roster.
