Dan Campbell tips his cap to Justin Fields ahead of Bears-Lions matchup
In their previous encounter with the Lions in Week 11, the Bears posed a significant challenge to Detroit and its defense. Justin Fields, returning from a five-week absence due to a thumb injury, played a pivotal role by contributing 169 passing yards, one touchdown, and an impressive 104 rushing yards against the Lions in Detroit.
The Bears’ offensive output, combined with a consistent defensive effort, initially placed the Lions in a 12-point deficit towards the end of the game. However, a familiar narrative unfolded as the Lions swiftly scored two touchdowns, reclaiming the lead they had established in the second quarter and ultimately securing the victory.
Despite the outcome, the Bears’ performance for the majority of the game, spanning 56 minutes, demonstrated a level of play that should have secured a win. Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledges this and emphasizes the importance of not underestimating the Bears, particularly Justin Fields.
Campbell praises Fields as a rare and dangerous player, noting his improved ability to keep his eyes down the field while on the move—a skill that adds to his threat on the field. The coach recognizes that the defensive strategy begins with containing Fields, considering him a key factor in the Bears’ performance.
The Lions struggled to contain Fields on the ground during their encounters in 2022. In their first meeting, Fields rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns, coming remarkably close to defeating the Lions. The second encounter saw the Lions better handle Fields through the air, limiting him to a 7-of-21 passing day for 75 yards. However, on the ground, Fields remained elusive, rushing for 132 yards on 10 carries.
With the Bears currently holding a 4-8 record and seeking redemption in a season marked by underwhelming results, a victory over the Lions would provide a positive start to a strong finish. Coach Campbell anticipates a competitive battle and emphasizes the significance of containing Fields to secure success against the Bears.
