Breaking news; CeeDee to be NFL’s highest-paid WR, but there’s a catch

If CeeDee Lamb wasn’t previously considered among the NFL’s top receivers, his outstanding performance in the 2023 season is making a compelling argument. As the regular season concludes, Lamb leads the league in receptions with 122, ranks second in receiving yards with 1,651, and is tied for third in touchdowns with 10. He has also broken the Cowboys’ franchise records in receptions and receiving yards, surpassing Michael Irvin’s impressive marks from 1995.

Despite his exceptional talent and contributions, the financial aspect comes into play. Lamb is currently under contract for one more season due to his fifth-year option, which will significantly increase his salary cap hit. Beyond that, the Cowboys are prepared to make a substantial financial commitment to retain him in Dallas.

When asked about the possibility of becoming the highest-paid receiver in the NFL, Lamb expressed interest, stating, “Ideally, yeah, for sure.” However, he emphasized that his primary focus is on aiding the Cowboys in their pursuit of a Super Bowl in February, and he doesn’t want contract discussions to distract from this goal.

Lamb indicated that talks about his future contract will occur after the season. While he may not be actively contemplating his next deal at the moment, the Cowboys are likely considering the financial implications. With impending contracts for Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons, the team is facing a looming salary cap challenge. Among the trio, Lamb, as a wide receiver, could be viewed as a less secure long-term commitment, given the replaceability of the position. The potential price tag for retaining Lamb is a consideration, with top receivers like Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, and Cooper Kupp commanding significant annual salaries. Despite the financial complexities, the Cowboys’ success in drafting talent adds a positive dimension to this challenge, creating a “good headache” for their cap specialists.
