After the anticipated departure of Ron Rivera, the Commanders have swiftly begun the search for his replacement. The team has already reached out to potential candidates, including Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Both Johnson and Glenn are highly sought-after in the 2024 hiring cycle, with Johnson being particularly praised for his success in the Lions’ efficient offense and his impact on quarterback Jared Goff.
Despite Johnson’s success with the Lions, the Panthers are keen on making a serious bid for him to fill their head coaching vacancy. The Chargers are also an attractive option for Johnson, given the presence of quarterback Justin Herbert. There is reported mutual interest between Johnson and the Chargers.
Aaron Glenn, Lions’ defensive coordinator, has had a less consistent tenure than Johnson but has been connected to several coaching opportunities. The Commanders are considering him as a potential candidate for their head coaching position. The team has also expressed interest in Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who brings veteran coaching experience and a background in defense, similar to Ron Rivera.
Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver is another candidate on the Commanders’ radar, known for his strong performance in Baltimore. Weaver, holding the title of associate head coach, has previous coordinator experience with the Texans in 2020.
While these are the initial candidates in the Commanders’ search, more names are expected to emerge. The competition for coaching talent is fierce, as these candidates may interview with multiple teams seeking to fill coaching vacancies. Virtual interviews with candidates on playoff teams are set to take place after January 16, as per this year’s adjustments to the interview procedure.
