Breaking News: Beware of fake Detroit Lions tickets

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Ahead of the Detroit Lions’ first-ever playoff game at Ford Field, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is cautioning potential ticket-buyers about potential scams in the realm of online sales.

Nessel emphasizes the inherent risks associated with online ticket purchases, where scammers can easily fabricate counterfeit tickets or resell tickets that have already been sold multiple times. In light of the upcoming playoff game at Ford Field, Nessel advises buyers to ensure the authenticity of purchased tickets to guarantee entry into the game, safeguarding both their enthusiasm and financial security. She encourages Lions fans to remain vigilant while exploring ticket options online, especially on retail sites like Ticketmaster, where Wild Card game tickets are fetching thousands of dollars.

Nessel underscores the need for caution in payment app transactions, detailing various scams involving peer-to-peer (P2P) money apps such as Apple Pay, Cash App, and Venmo. These scams may involve scammers posing as a buyer’s bank, seeking sensitive information, or using fake emails to trick users into divulging passwords. To protect against scams, Nessel advises individuals to be cautious of such tactics and never share sensitive information.

In the context of ticket sales, Nessel also warns about the fake check scam, where scammers send counterfeit checks for more than the ticket cost, asking sellers to deposit the check and refund the difference. The checks are fake, leading to financial losses for the seller.

To assist buyers in avoiding scams, Nessel offers practical tips, including verifying the legitimacy of the vendor, researching unfamiliar ticket sellers, using credit cards for added protection, ensuring secure website transactions, and providing contact information for the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team for those with complaints about online ticket purchases.
