Since 2022, Wes Welker has been coaching wide receivers for the Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins WR Coach Wes Welker: Former NFL Star
In the 2004 NFL Draft, Wes Welker went undrafted and initially signed with the San Diego Chargers. However, he was released by the Chargers after just one game, leading to the Miami Dolphins acquiring him. Standing at five-foot-nine, Welker spent over two seasons with the Dolphins, making an impact by catching 96 passes for 1,121 yards and scoring once. In 2007, Miami traded Welker to the New England Patriots, where he spent the next six years playing alongside future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. During his time with the Patriots, Welker earned first-team All-Pro honors three times and notably led the league in receptions on three occasions.
In 2013, Wes Welker made a transition to the Denver Broncos, where he teamed up with another Hall of Fame quarterback, Peyton Manning. During his time with the Broncos, Welker recorded impressive statistics, amassing 122 receptions, 1,242 yards, and scoring 12 touchdowns. Following a single season with the St. Louis Rams in 2015, he decided to retire from professional football.
Swiftly transitioning to the coaching side of the NFL, the Oklahoma native took on an offensive assistant role with the Houston Texans in 2017 under the guidance of former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. After spending two seasons in Houston, Welker joined Kyle Shanahan as a receivers coach with the San Francisco 49ers. Subsequently, he followed fellow assistant Mike McDaniel to Miami for the 2022 season, and he has remained with the Dolphins ever since.
Wide Receivers Under Wes Welker
Since entering the coaching realm in 2019, Wes Welker has had a notable impact on some of the NFL’s top wide receivers. During his final season with the San Francisco 49ers, star playmaker Deebo Samuel delivered an All-Pro performance, recording 77 receptions for an impressive 1,405 yards, leading the league with an average of 18.2 yards per reception.
Under Welker’s guidance, Brandon Aiyuk experienced growth as a wide receiver. In Welker’s coaching tenure, Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill has amassed an impressive 3,509 receiving yards over two years. Additionally, fellow Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle achieved a career-best performance, tallying 1,356 yards in the previous season, which marked his first under Welker as his head coach.
