Breaking news: New England Patriots commit on QB in NFL Draft

The New England Patriots have an opportunity to choose the future face of their team as they hold the third overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. The potential candidates include USC quarterback Caleb Williams, UNC QB Drake Maye, LSU QB Jayden Daniels, or Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

During Tuesday’s Arbella Early Edition, fans were asked whether the Patriots should prioritize selecting the best available quarterback or opt for Marvin Harrison Jr. with the third pick. While Harrison received the majority of votes, Phil Perry disagreed vehemently, advocating for the Patriots to choose a quarterback in the April draft.

Perry emphasized the unpredictable nature of the draft, likening it to a game of chance. He argued that without taking a chance on a quarterback, a team cannot achieve success. Perry cited examples from the 2021 draft where teams selected top talents like Patrick Surtain, Jaycee Horn, and Jaylen Waddle, but without a quarterback, these teams did not significantly progress towards a Super Bowl. He stressed the importance of taking risks to find a quarterback and acknowledged the potential for failure but deemed it a risk worth taking.

In the event that the Patriots pass on Williams, Maye, and Daniels, Perry suggested they could still find a quarterback later in the draft, mentioning options like Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, and Oregon’s Bo Nix.

Perry provided insights into the potential choices at quarterback, comparing Drake Maye’s game to Jordan Love’s style but noting inconsistencies. On the other hand, he praised Jayden Daniels for his standout performances in the SEC, describing him as a freaky athlete with accurate deep throws and ball security.

Following a disappointing 2023 season, where rookie quarterback Mac Jones struggled and was eventually benched in favor of Bailey Zappe, the Patriots are determined to address their quarterback position either through the draft or free agency.

The 2024 NFL Draft is set to kick off on April 25.
