Injury Report: San Francisco 49ERS key star player is back, Young and Gregory need to take responsibility on the defensive line

In the upcoming playoff opener against the Green Bay Packers, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive lineup sees Arik Armstead making a return, while Clelin Ferrell will be absent due to injuries. Armstead, who missed the last five games due to foot and knee issues, has been given the green light after a week of solid practice.

For the divisional-round game scheduled for 5:15 p.m., Ferrell is the sole 49ers’ player ruled out, while the Packers have ruled out linebacker Kingsley Enagbare. Ferrell, who started all 17 games at defensive end alongside Nick Bosa, will be replaced by Chase Young and Randy Gregory to add pressure to Packers quarterback Jordan Love.

Armstead expressed confidence in Young and Gregory, stating that they are eager for the opportunity and will play a crucial role in achieving the team’s objectives. The primary goal on Saturday is to disrupt Love, who impressed in the previous playoff game against the Cowboys.

Young acknowledged Love’s improvement and stressed the need for the 49ers to be at their best in rushing the quarterback. Despite Ferrell’s absence, the defensive end rotation remains focused on their consistent approach, with Gregory emphasizing the “next man up” mentality.

Both Gregory and Young have modest sack numbers since joining in October trades, but they are ready to contribute to the team’s success in the playoffs. Young, in particular, is thrilled about entering the playoffs for the first time since his 2020 wild-card appearance.

Armstead, who has no concerns about aggravating his foot injury, is determined to make an impact in the playoffs. Playing at his best since 2019 before the foot issue sidelined him, Armstead sees the playoffs as an opportunity to prove himself and contribute significantly to extending the team’s season. He embraces the responsibility of being a key player in critical moments and values the intensity and atmosphere of playoff competition.
