LSU’s defensive coaching staff has been finalized with the return of Corey Raymond, alongside the new additions of Kevin Peoples and Jake Olsen, as announced by head coach Brian Kelly on Thursday.
Raymond is rejoining the Tigers after spending the last two seasons at Florida, while Peoples and Olsen are making their way to LSU after a two-year tenure at Missouri.
In their respective roles, Raymond will take on the position of secondary coach, Peoples will be responsible for coaching the edge rushers, and Olsen will focus on coaching the safeties.
All three coaches have strong connections to Louisiana, with Raymond having spent 13 years of his coaching career at LSU, Peoples coaching at Tulane and Northwestern State, and Olsen gaining experience with Louisiana-Monroe, Nicholls State, and Northwestern State.
During his previous stint at LSU from 2012-2021, Raymond coached seven players who earned first-team All-America honors and had four first-round NFL Draft picks. Additionally, he had five players selected in the second round of the NFL Draft and coached the 2019 Jim Thorpe Award winner, Grant Delpit. Raymond, a former standout defensive back for the Tigers, also played six seasons in the NFL.
Kelly expressed enthusiasm about Raymond’s return, highlighting his passion for LSU and the goal of having the best defensive back unit in the country. Kelly emphasized Raymond’s extensive knowledge, experience, and recruiting success, considering him a valuable addition to the already strong defensive staff.
The hire has garnered praise from LSU targets and prospects who are expressing their excitement about the coaching team.
