Ever since the Commanders appointed Adam Peters as their new General Manager, speculations have circulated within the NFL community, suggesting that the team’s next coach could be Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. With the conclusion of Detroit’s season, Johnson is now available for recruitment.
Throughout the 2023 season, Johnson has been consistently seen as a probable head coach, a prospect that bodes well for his career but poses a challenge for the Lions, who must now find a replacement for him. As with any rising coordinator, the question of whether he can successfully transition to the next level remains uncertain, given the fundamental differences in the job.
The Commanders, in their quest for a new coach, have a pool of strong candidates to consider. These include Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, and Ravens assistant head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.
While the field is competitive, recent events underscore the significance of coaching experience, giving Quinn an advantage. This raises curiosity about other candidates with head-coaching experience who may not yet be on the Commanders’ radar.
