According to a report by Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, it seems that Kirk Cousins might be asking for a contract that the Vikings find too expensive this offseason. Walters suggests that Cousins is seeking a guaranteed $90 million for a two-year deal, despite still recovering from Achilles surgery in November. The Vikings, however, are unlikely to meet such a high price. Despite public expressions of mutual interest in continuing their partnership, the deciding factor appears to be the financial terms.

Cousins has voiced his desire to conclude his career with the Vikings, and the team has shown interest in retaining him. Yet, the ultimate decision seems to hinge on the contract value. If Cousins and his representatives are flexible and willing to negotiate within a reasonable range for the team, he may stay with the Vikings. However, if they are set on maximizing his contract value, the possibility of him signing with another team increases.

The mentioned $90 million over two years seems steep, especially considering the Vikings’ other financial obligations. They need to extend contracts for players like Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw while addressing defensive needs. If Cousins pursues such a deal, the Vikings may opt to let him go and explore alternative options.

In the event that Cousins departs, the Vikings would need a new starting quarterback for the first time in six years. Walters suggests Russell Wilson as a potential bridge option. Financially, Wilson’s contract has a salary offset in 2024, allowing the Vikings to sign him for the NFL veteran minimum of $1.2 million with incentives, with the Broncos covering the rest. While Wilson’s fit in the offensive scheme raises questions, the Vikings may consider him as a cost-effective alternative to Cousins. Ultimately, the offseason decision-making process for the Vikings will be shaped by these financial considerations and the broader quarterback landscape.
