After parting ways with former defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier in February, the Buffalo Bills opted not to fill the position for the 2023 season. Instead, head coach Sean McDermott assumed the role of the team’s defensive play-caller.
On Tuesday, the promotion of Bobby Babich from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator was officially announced. However, it remains uncertain whether McDermott or Babich will be calling the defensive plays in the upcoming 2024 season, as reported by ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg. General Manager Brandon Beane mentioned last week that the team is supportive of McDermott’s decision. Beane stated that if McDermott believes someone else should call the plays, the team would accommodate that choice. Alternatively, if McDermott expresses the desire to continue handling the responsibilities, the team is open to that option, given the solid defensive performance in the 2023 regular season where the Bills ranked fourth in points allowed and ninth in yards allowed.
