LATEST: Green Bay Packers Part Ways With Another Defensive Coach Amid Fresh Regimen

The 2024 season is set to bring heightened expectations for the Green Bay Packers. After making it to the divisional round of the playoffs during Jordan Love’s inaugural year as the starting quarterback, that achievement is considered the baseline for his second year. Although the offense demonstrated its ability to score effectively against various teams towards the end of the season, the defense encountered occasional setbacks.

Post-season, the Packers opted for a change in their defensive coaching staff by bringing in former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley as the defensive coordinator. Nevertheless, there appears to be an additional opening for a defensive coaching position at the moment.

Green Bay Packers Coach Abruptly Steps Away From Team

Montgomery initially joined Dom Capers’ coaching staff in 2015 as a defensive assistant, transitioning from eight years as a coach at the college level. In 2018, during Mike Pettine’s first season as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator, Montgomery earned a promotion to become the team’s defensive line coach. Additionally, in 2022, Joe Barry bestowed upon him the title of running game coordinator. As of that year, Montgomery held the distinction of being the Packers’ longest-serving coach.

According to information from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Montgomery is set to interview for a coaching position with the New England Patriots in the near future. The Green Bay Packers have yet to announce who will take over coaching responsibilities for their defensive line. Notably, in the previous season, Green Bay’s defensive rankings were less than stellar, as they ranked 28th in rush yards allowed and 23rd in yards allowed per carry. The persistent struggles in the run defense have been an ongoing issue for the Packers, suggesting that a change in the coaching staff’s approach to this aspect could have a significant impact on the defense in the upcoming 2024 season.
