For the second time in under a month, the New England Patriots are bidding farewell to a member of the Belichick clan.
Patriots OLB coach Steve Belichick has now accepted the position to become the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator.
After 12 seasons coaching in the NFL with the Patriots, he heads to the college ranks in a coordinator capacity.

On January 11, the New England Patriots and their longstanding head coach Bill Belichick mutually decided to part ways. The following day, Jerod Mayo, a former All-Pro linebacker turned inside linebackers coach, was hired as the replacement. Two weeks ago, Mayo confirmed that offers were extended to Steve Belichick and his brother, Brian Belichick, to retain their positions on the coaching staff as defensive assistant and safeties coach, respectively. Steve had been with the team since 2012, serving as the defensive play-caller and outside linebackers coach last season, while Brian took on his role in 2020.
The newly appointed coordinator for the Huskies had collaborated with Jedd Fisch, the incoming first-year head coach for Washington, in 2020 when he was the quarterbacks coach in New England. Fisch signed a seven-year contract on January 14 to lead the Huskies, succeeding Kalen DeBoer, who had recently taken over at the University of Alabama, following Nick Saban’s reported retirement.
Belichick and Fisch are now part of a program that achieved a 14-1 record last season but fell short to Michigan in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
