The Detroit Lions face a significant decision regarding veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Known for his impact in the NFL, Gardner-Johnson’s 2023 season with the Lions was marred by injury after a stellar performance in 2022 where he led the league with six interceptions. A torn pectoral muscle sidelined him for 14 games, and although he made a commendable effort to return for the playoffs, he only played a rotational role upon his comeback.
Despite this setback, Lions rookie cornerback Brian Branch advocates for Gardner-Johnson’s return. Branch took to Twitter to express his support for re-signing Gardner-Johnson, who had previously inked a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the team.
Branch’s tweet left no room for ambiguity: “Yes bring this mf back.”

However, there’s a conundrum highlighted by Erik Schlitt regarding Gardner-Johnson’s potential return. While he possesses versatile skills and the potential for Pro Bowl performance, the Lions lack clear openings in their starting lineup for the positions he plays. With emerging talents like Ifeatu Melifonwu and Kerby Joseph at safety, and Brian Branch excelling in the slot, the team may prioritize retaining their homegrown talents in prominent roles.
The question arises: Is it justifiable to invest in Gardner-Johnson’s contract when he may not secure a starting position? Gardner-Johnson’s salary expectations in free agency remain uncertain. Having previously signed a one-year deal to prove himself in 2023, his injury-marred season could affect his asking price. Would he be willing to accept another reasonable contract with the Lions? Otherwise, returning to a rotational role might not be appealing to him.
However, considering Branch’s desire for Gardner-Johnson’s return, there’s value in having a mentor with on-field prowess in the locker room, even if their skill sets overlap significantly.
