With the trade deadline approaching, the NBA champions are possibly interested in bringing back a player who averages five points per game.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer mentioned in his recent column that the Denver Nuggets are contemplating a trade to acquire veteran guard Monte Morris, who is currently playing for the Detroit Pistons. O’Connor points out that Denver is in need of a backup player to bolster their bench.
Although not a high-profile name, the 28-year-old Morris is still held in high regard in Denver. He started his career with the Nuggets and spent five seasons with them. While he wasn’t part of Denver’s championship-winning team last season, having been traded in 2022 as part of a deal for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Morris has a solid track record with the Nuggets. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.7 assists per game during his time with them, including stepping up as a starter when Jamal Murray was sidelined with an injury in the 2021-2022 season. Additionally, he is familiar with the coaching style of Michael Malone.
Morris, who has seen reduced playing time and is averaging 4.5 points per game for the struggling Pistons this season, still possesses playmaking abilities that could benefit Denver’s second unit. He might be a better fit for directing the offense compared to the score-first mentality of Reggie Jackson, who currently backs up Murray. With Morris set to become a free agent after the season, a reunion with the Nuggets could be worthwhile, especially given his history of delivering in clutch situations.
