potential fit for Rams

The Los Angeles Rams might find themselves once again searching for a quarterback during the later rounds of the NFL Draft in April. This comes as a bit of a disappointment, particularly considering they picked Stetson Bennett in the fourth round just last year. Yet, with uncertainty surrounding Bennett’s future and no solid backup for Stafford, it seems sensible to consider drafting another quarterback.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid recently assessed the top 12 quarterbacks in the NFL Draft and suggested potential teams for each player. Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman landed at number 10 on the list, with Reid earmarking the Rams as a potential fit. According to Reid, “Hartman demonstrates quick decision-making and accuracy on deep throws, despite limitations in arm strength. He transferred to Notre Dame for experience in a pro-style system but struggles under pressure, often making hasty decisions. While successful in the pocket, he lacks consistent playmaking outside of structured plays, favoring systems emphasizing rhythm and timing.”

Drafting Hartman might not generate much excitement for the Rams, as his potential is likely capped as a backup quarterback. Whether the Rams can secure a player like Carson Wentz remains uncertain. In such a scenario, drafting a quarterback, perhaps on day three, might be the best course of action to address the backup position, following last year’s plan of securing a long-term backup after Bennett’s inconsistent preseason.

How the Rams address the quarterback position this offseason will be intriguing. Neglecting it could lead to another situation like Brett Rypien’s appearance against the Green Bay Packers. However, there may not be a day one or two prospect with sufficient developmental potential as a starter. Consequently, drafting a quarterback on day three and hoping for a viable backup option might be their most viable strategy.
