Quarterback and former NFL regular-season Most Valuable Player Matt Ryan shared insights during Super Bowl week about his decision to remain sidelined this season. Despite having opportunities to play for other teams, the longtime Atlanta Falcons starter opted to serve as an analyst for CBS Sports.
Ryan, who played for the Atlanta Falcons from 2008 until the end of the 2021 season, experienced a disappointing 2022 campaign with the Indianapolis Colts, where he was benched for a period. Although it was confirmed in the spring that the then-almost 38-year-old Ryan would be joining CBS, speculation about a potential return to the field persisted throughout the summer and into the season.
Ryan eventually confirmed early in the fall that he had “no interest” in playing because he was “enjoying” his work at CBS. Pro Football Talk previously noted that Ryan technically had an obligation to seek NFL employment and not refuse reasonable opportunities to play due to the $12 million owed to him by the Colts for that season.
Ryan’s acknowledgment that he felt capable of playing is noteworthy, especially considering how fellow veteran quarterback Joe Flacco transitioned from watching games on the couch to becoming a key player for the 2023 Cleveland Browns, ultimately winning The Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
With Ryan seemingly content in his current off-the-field pursuits, it appears he has found comfort in his decision.
