BREAKING: 2 Miami Hurricanes key players are pivotal figures in 2024 Pro Football

The Pro Football Hall of Fame unveiled seven new additions to its esteemed ranks on Thursday evening, with two ex-University of Miami Hurricanes, Devin Hester and Andre Johnson, being among the distinguished football legends set to be honored in Canton this upcoming summer.

This year’s cohort comprises seven former players, with two additional senior inductees adding to the roster, making it a class notably focused on defensive prowess. Randy Gradishar and Steve “Mongo” McMichael are the senior inductees, while Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, and Patrick Willis complete the lineup.

Johnson has made history as the inaugural Houston Texan to earn a spot in Canton. Throughout his illustrious 14-year tenure, he amassed an impressive 1,062 receptions, totaling 14,185 yards, and notching 70 touchdowns. Selected third in the NFL Draft, he earned seven Pro Bowl selections and achieved First Team All-Pro honors twice.

On the other hand, Hester’s induction marks a groundbreaking moment as the first specialist or kick returner to be enshrined in the Hall. Widely regarded as one of the greatest return specialists in NFL history, he recorded an impressive 14 punt return touchdowns and five kickoff return touchdowns during his 11-year career. Among his memorable feats is a dazzling 92-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI against the Indianapolis Colts.

Dwight Freeney

Freeney distinguished himself as a formidable pass rusher throughout his 16-year NFL career, notably spending the first 11 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. With seven Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro nods to his name, he clinched victory in Super Bowl XLI with the Colts, triumphing over Hester’s Chicago Bears. Freeney retired with 125.5 sacks and 128 tackles for loss.

Peppers, primarily renowned for his tenure with the Carolina Panthers, concluded his career ranked fourth on the all-time sack list, boasting 159.5 sacks.

Gradishar and McMichael, both selected from the senior ballot in their final year of eligibility, earned their spots through remarkable careers. Gradishar, a stalwart of the Denver Broncos in the 1970s and 1980s, clinched the AP Defensive Player of the Year award in 1978 and secured seven Pro Bowl selections alongside two All-Pro honors.

McMichael’s legacy includes his integral role in the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears defense, which clinched a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. After previous finalist appearances, McMichael finally secured his induction on this ballot.

Willis, a standout for the San Francisco 49ers over eight seasons, garnered seven Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro nods. He also claimed the Rookie of the Year Award in 2007.
