DONE DEAL: Mets sign another legend, set to receive $3.5 million.

The Mets have inked Ji-Man Choi to a minor league contract, which could potentially yield him $3.5 million should he secure a spot on the major league roster.

Los Angeles Dodgers v San Diego Padres

Approaching his 33rd year, Choi boasts a fairly commendable track record as a major league batter throughout his career. However, he faced difficulties in the 2023 season, experiencing a slump with limited opportunities, batting just .163/.239/.385 with six homers and a 65 wRC+ across 117 plate appearances split between the Pirates and Padres. Notably, from 2017 to 2022, Choi showcased more consistent performance, batting .245/.350/.436 with a 120 wRC+ while primarily representing the Rays, along with stints at the Yankees and Brewers.

Regarding his platoon tendencies, Choi demonstrates significant disparities. Throughout his career, he has posted a robust 122 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers, contrasted by a much lower 65 wRC+ against lefties. It’s anticipated that Choi will vie for a spot on the Opening Day roster, potentially competing with DJ Stewart, a left-handed-hitting DH who surprised in the 2023 season, for playing time.
