Pete Alonso, like numerous New York Mets position players, arrived at camp on Saturday. However, unlike his teammates, Alonso faces a significant yet uncertain contract situation.

Despite the Mets feeling content with their offseason moves, they couldn’t secure a contract extension for the three-time All-Star. Mets general manager David Stearns indicated that a long-term deal is unlikely before Alonso hits free agency after the season, a topic addressed during his press conference.

“I’m really enthusiastic about starting spring training. We have a fantastic group, and I’m thrilled to be here,” Alonso expressed.

Alonso recognizes that focusing on his performance on the field will naturally address the financial aspect. “My responsibility remains the same—to deliver quality at-bats, play solid defense, run the bases, and be a supportive teammate,” he stated.

His primary focus entering camp is preparing for a full season and striving for postseason success. “I aim to excel daily and earn our spot in the playoffs. As for free agency, I’m solely focused on the present,” Alonso emphasized.

Carlos Mendoza, his new manager, observed a similar scenario in 2022 while serving as the Yankees’ bench coach when Aaron Judge had a stellar contract year. Mendoza is thrilled to have Alonso on his team now and advises him to stay true to himself and enjoy the game.

Alonso’s loyalty lies with the Mets, the team that drafted him. When asked about being a lifelong Met, Alonso expressed openness to the idea but acknowledged the uncertainty of the future.

In essence, Alonso’s approach is straightforward: deliver on the field, and the rest will follow, whether it’s with the Mets or elsewhere.
