Several position groups for the Broncos could undergo changes this offseason, but it seems unlikely that safety will be one of them. Nonetheless, Justin Simmons remains a notable figure in terms of financial considerations. With one year left on his current four-year, $61 million deal, Simmons is slated to earn $14.5 million, but none of it is guaranteed. His 2024 cap hit is set at $18.25 million, prompting speculation about potential adjustments to his contract.
Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post suggests that there will likely be some action regarding Simmons’ contract, which could involve restructuring or extending the deal if the Broncos want to keep the seasoned playmaker. While trading him could offer financial flexibility, his departure would leave a significant gap in Denver’s defense. Given Simmons’ reliability and impressive stats, it seems improbable that the Broncos would actively seek to part ways with him.
Simmons’ standout performance in 2023, including three interceptions, eight pass breakups, and two forced fumbles, earned him second-team All-Pro honors for the fourth time, showcasing his consistent excellence. At 30 years old, investing in another multi-year contract for Simmons appears to be a safer bet compared to other aging options at the position.
Currently, P.J. Locke is the only other safety for the Broncos set to enter free agency in March. Adjusting Simmons’ contract could provide financial clarity and potentially free up funds to re-sign Locke, who performed well in relief of Kareem Jackson. Apart from Simmons, Denver’s safety depth chart lacks proven talent, with Caden Sterns, JL Skinner, and Delarrin Turner-Yell as the other options.
The Broncos fielded trade inquiries before the deadline, with wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton drawing interest, along with Simmons. However, interested parties were likely deterred by the remaining value of his contract. With Denver among several teams facing cap constraints, they’ll need to make cost-cutting moves soon. While moving on from Simmons might not be ideal, it remains to be seen if a new agreement can be reached to mitigate the financial impact of his contract.
