It’s evident to almost everyone that the Denver Broncos are in dire need of a quarterback, especially since Sean Payton’s connection with Russell Wilson strongly suggests Wilson’s imminent departure from the team. This has sparked speculation among Broncos fans about who might step into Wilson’s role as the team’s signal-caller. Although the Broncos haven’t revealed their plans, it’s obvious they’re actively seeking a skilled quarterback to fill the void.
Spencer Rattler is projected by the mock draft to be selected by the Denver Broncos in later rounds.
Jon Heath from Broncos Wire reports that according to Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire, there’s a prediction that the Broncos might take a chance on South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler in the third round. Despite seeming unconventional, the rationale behind this choice suggests it’s driven by necessity rather than a lack of other promising prospects.
Popejoy’s mock draft envisions the Broncos selecting Alabama pass rusher Dallas Turner in the first round. With their second-round pick traded to the New Orleans Saints in the Sean Payton deal last year, Denver’s next selection opportunity is in the third round.
In this scenario, the Broncos opt for Spencer Rattler, who is projected as the 76th pick. Notably, four other quarterbacks are chosen between the 12th pick (Turner) and the 76th pick (Rattler): Michael Penix (39), Bo Nix (42), J.J. McCarthy (43), and Michael Pratt (74).
Rattler, initially gaining attention through his appearance on QB1: Beyond the Lights Season 3, has shown promise during his tenure with the Gamecocks, accumulating 3186 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and a 147.7 passer rating across 12 starts.
Should Payton opt for Rattler as the top available quarterback in the draft, it’s important to recognize that he would enter the league as a developmental project, likely facing challenges early in his career. However, there’s potential for significant growth if he can integrate effectively with his teammates and coaching staff.
