Breaking news: Mets ink deal with the power-hitting star of the New York Yankees who plays first base

Luke Voit, formerly of the New York Yankees, has returned to the Mets for a second stint. He officially signed a minor league contract with the team on Monday, with an invitation to participate in big-league spring training. Voit spent three and a half seasons with the Yankees after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018. He emerged as their primary first baseman, tallying impressive statistics including 68 home runs, 182 RBIs, and a slash line of .271/.363/.520 with a .883 OPS across 281 games. Notably, Voit led the league in home runs during the shortened 2020 season with 22, earning him a ninth-place finish in the AL MVP race.

Luke Voit's latest Yankees injury recovery is 'agonizing'

However, Voit’s 2021 season was marred by injuries, leading to the Yankees acquiring Anthony Rizzo at the trade deadline, relegating Voit to a diminished role. Subsequently, Voit was traded to the San Diego Padres in the offseason. In 2022, Voit posted solid numbers with the Padres, hitting 22 home runs and driving in 69 RBIs, although his OPS dropped to .710. He was later traded to the Washington Nationals midway through the season as part of the Juan Soto trade.

Despite a challenging 2023 season at the major league level, Voit showcased his productivity with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, hitting 14 home runs, 35 RBIs, and recording a remarkable 1.058 OPS before opting out of his contract in August to join the Milwaukee Brewers for 22 games. Now 33 years old, Voit aims to revive his career in the majors. With the Mets, he sees an opportunity, particularly with the designated hitter position currently open.
