The premier category of endurance racing has seen significant growth following the transition to Hypercars from the previous LMP1 rules, attracting various manufacturers to showcase their designs. Consequently, a notable total of 23 vehicles are set to vie for top positions in the Hypercar class at Le Mans, including the participation of Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button.
Massive Le Mans field announced with significant ex-F1 representation
Having participated in last season’s Garage 56 entry, which garnered significant attention through a collaboration with NASCAR, Button returns to the top class after a hiatus since 2018, now racing with Hertz Team Jota for a full season in the WEC this year.
Meanwhile, defending his victory in the renowned race is former Sauber and Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi, who, alongside James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi, clinched a thrilling win for Ferrari upon the Prancing Horse’s comeback to Le Mans last year.
In total, 23 Hypercars and 23 cars in the newly introduced LMGT3 class will be accompanied by 16 LMP2 cars for a one-off event. The ‘middle’ endurance class has been permanently removed from the World Endurance Championship this season.
Among other familiar faces to watch out for, Kamui Kobayashi will partner with Nyck de Vries in the #7 Toyota, with the beloved former Sauber driver now assuming the role of team principal at Toyota in addition to his driving duties, alongside Mike Conway.
