As we’re still amidst this offseason, it’s never too early to start contemplating the next one. According to a report by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the New York Mets could emerge as frontrunners to acquire Juan Soto in free agency after the 2024 season.
Soto, recently traded from the San Diego Padres to the New York Yankees, will undoubtedly attract attention from various teams. However, the Yankees may need to observe his performance in New York before considering an extension. Yet, with Soto being represented by Scott Boras and nearing free agency, it’s unlikely he’d entertain any offers before testing the market.
Soto’s credentials speak volumes about his prowess as one of baseball’s elite hitters, achieving remarkable feats before turning 25. With three All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards, and a batting title, he’s already made a significant mark. Additionally, his contribution to the Washington Nationals’ 2019 World Series victory solidifies his pedigree. Soto boasts a career .284 batting average and an impressive .421 on-base percentage.
Anticipated to command a contract exceeding $500 million, only a handful of teams possess the financial capability to pursue him. The Los Angeles Dodgers may be precluded due to prior commitments, leaving teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and notably, the Mets, as potential contenders, per Nightengale’s analysis.
