According to reports from ESPN, NFL Network, and Bleacher Report on Thursday night, the Minnesota Vikings are set to release running back Alexander Mattison, resulting in a salary cap saving of over $3 million.
Mattison, who has been with the team for five years, primarily as a backup to Dalvin Cook, struggled to perform consistently as a starter last season, accumulating 892 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns in 16 games. Despite signing a two-year, $7 million extension in 2023, Mattison’s underwhelming performance, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry without scoring a rushing touchdown and committing three fumbles, led to his release. The Vikings will incur approximately $1.25 million in dead money due to his release, which can be reallocated to other players. With Mattison gone, Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu remain as the only other running backs on the Vikings’ roster, while Cam Akers, acquired in a September trade, is poised to enter free agency.
