Before Kiké Hernández rejoined the Los Angeles Dodgers, there was a moment when he was close to signing with the New York Yankees. The Yankees were eager to bring him on board, but Hernández’s heart was set on returning to the Dodgers.
Eventually, the Dodgers managed to make it work by trading Manuel Margot to the Minnesota Twins. Interestingly, the Yankees didn’t just have their eyes on Hernández; they also expressed interest in Amed Rosario, as reported by Joel Sherman of The New York Post. Sherman noted that Hernández was clear about his preference to return to the Dodgers and was willing to wait until they could create space for him, which they did by trading Margot. The Yankees had offered Rosario the same $4 million deal they offered Hernández, but Rosario chose to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays for a $1.5 million base salary instead.
Per Joel Sherman of The New York Post
Rosario joined the Dodgers midway through the 2023 season following a trade from the Cleveland Guardians. During his tenure of 48 games with the Dodgers, he achieved a batting average of .256, along with three home runs and eighteen RBIs. The Yankees extended an offer to Rosario matching the one made to Hernández—a $4 million contract for a single year. However, Rosario chose to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays for a reduced salary, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million. Similar to Hernández, Rosario’s decision to decline the Yankees’ offer stemmed from his desire to play for a team where he could have more playing time.
