The Yankees are holding out hope for positive news regarding Gerrit Cole’s condition. However, regardless of the outcome of tests on his right elbow, the stark reality is that they’ll need to designate a new Opening Day starter.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there’s been no definitive update on Cole’s elbow, which underwent an MRI exam on Monday. Even if the scan shows no issues, it’s unlikely that he’ll have enough time to prepare for the March 28 game in Houston.
The team has already begun deliberating on who will step in. Marcus Stroman appears to be the most suitable candidate. Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that discussions have commenced, and he expects to provide more clarity in the coming days.
Currently, the Yankees are keeping their hopes up. Cole underwent further testing on Tuesday, but specifics weren’t disclosed.
Boone stated that Cole expressed concerns about not recovering as usual after his spring outings. Cole’s last appearance was in a three-inning, 47-pitch live batting practice session on Thursday.
Even if the imaging reveals no significant issues, Cole, who has only made one start in the Grapefruit League, would need to start the preparation process anew, with Opening Day drawing closer.
Boone mentioned he spoke with Cole on Tuesday morning and was asked about how Cole is handling the situation. Boone noted that Cole is coping with the uncertainty but acknowledged the challenge of understanding the extent of the issue.
