Minnesota has been striving to address its secondary issues through both the draft and free agency for several years now. In the 2023 NFL draft, they selected cornerback Mekhi Blackmon with their second overall pick (No. 102 in the third round) and also acquired CB Byron Murphy Jr. through free agency, paying him a total of $17.5 million.
Blackmon showed promise in a limited role during his rookie season, starting three games and recording 8 pass deflections, 3 tackles for loss, and an interception according to Pro Football Reference. However, Murphy struggled despite his previous success with the Arizona Cardinals, finishing 87th out of 127 qualifying cornerbacks.
Akayleb Evans, a fourth-round pick in 2022, started alongside Murphy last season when healthy. Andrew Booth Jr., a second-round selection in 2022, played as a backup alongside Blackmon last year but faced challenges living up to his draft status due to injuries, missing 11 regular-season games as a rookie.
Stephon Gilmore is expected to excel under defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ blitz-heavy scheme, which features various unique zone coverages. Throughout his NFL career, which includes stints with the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Cowboys, Gilmore has consistently performed at an elite level.
