On paper, the Denver Broncos appear to be lacking a quarterback, but it’s possible they already have their 2024 starter within their current roster.
There’s increasing belief that Jarrett Stidham is poised to become the Broncos’ starting quarterback when the 2024 season kicks off. According to a recent report by Mike Klis of 9 News, Stidham is currently the frontrunner for the position, with the team considering adding a rookie to the mix.
ESPN’s Jeff Legwold also pointed out that the Broncos haven’t aggressively pursued quarterbacks in free agency, indicating that a major move is unlikely, despite Coach Sean Payton’s desire to address the position.
The Broncos are hampered by a significant constraint: the hefty dead cap hit from releasing Russell Wilson, which limits their ability to compete for top quarterback salaries. For instance, Sam Darnold’s acquisition by the Minnesota Vikings cost $10 million, a price tag that would eat up roughly half of the Broncos’ available cap space.
While Stidham may not be the most inspiring option, the Broncos are somewhat backed into a corner with limited alternatives. They hold the No. 12 overall pick in the draft, but it might be too late for them to snag one of the premier quarterbacks on the board at that point.
