On Friday, Steve Tensi, renowned quarterback for both the Denver Broncos and Florida State Seminoles, passed away at the age of 81. Tensi, honored in the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame and the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame, played a pivotal role in the Broncos’ formative years in the NFL.

Steve Tensi, a celebrated figure in Denver Broncos history, played a pivotal role during the team’s initial years in the newly merged National Football League. The NFL, although established in 1920, underwent a significant transformation in 1970, marking the inception of the structure we recognize today.
In 1970, the NFL inaugurated a regular season format comprising two conferences. Notably, Steve Tensi etched his name in history by becoming the first quarterback to deliver a touchdown pass for the Denver Broncos within this inaugural season.
Arriving via trade from the 1967 San Diego Chargers, Tensi’s tenure with the Broncos spanned a brief four years before he exited the league due to injuries. Despite his relatively short stint, Tensi left an indelible mark as one of the franchise’s most influential quarterbacks.
In the 1969 AFL season, Tensi showcased his prowess, securing a place among the league’s elite quarterbacks by ranking in the top five for passing touchdowns and passer rating.
Following Tensi’s demise, numerous fans expressed their condolences and shared memories of his contributions on social media platforms.

On top of being a Denver Broncos legend, Steve Tensi is also a Florida State Seminoles legend
Steve Tensi’s legacy extends beyond his remarkable contributions to the NFL’s early days; it’s also deeply intertwined with the Florida State Seminoles, where he forged a significant bond with his wife, Barbara Jean Nasrallah.
During his senior year in 1964-1965, Tensi commanded the quarterback position for the Seminoles, leaving an indelible mark on the program. Notably, he played a pivotal role in securing the school’s inaugural victory over their in-state rivals, the Florida Gators.
Under Tensi’s leadership, the Seminoles achieved a remarkable 10-1-1 record, culminating in a triumphant win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Gator Bowl. This victory marked another historic milestone for the Seminoles, triumphing over one of college football’s most esteemed programs.
Tensi’s exceptional performance in the Gator Bowl earned him the MVP title, courtesy of a record-breaking five touchdown passes—a feat that still stands tall over 50 years later.
Following his tenure in professional football, Tensi briefly delved into coaching before eventually settling in Boone, NC, in 1988, where he pursued a career in construction until his passing.
