BREAKING NEWS: Manager expressed uncertainty regarding whether their legend would start the year on active IL.

The situation surrounding Cincinnati Reds’ infielder Matt McLain is becoming increasingly concerning. Following his absence earlier this week due to a shoulder problem, manager David Bell initially played down its severity. However, he is now discussing potential grim outcomes.

According to Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bell mentioned that McLain underwent an MRI for his left shoulder, and they are considering various courses of action. Bell expressed uncertainty about whether McLain would be ready to start the season on the active roster or if he would be placed on the injured list. Bell emphasized that they are exploring all possibilities, including the prospect of surgery.

This unfortunate development adds to the challenges facing the Cincinnati Reds, who are already grappling with the absence of Noelvi Marte due to an 80-game PED suspension. With Matt McLain’s uncertain status, the Reds’ previously robust infield depth is now under strain.

Should McLain be sidelined, Cincinnati would likely turn to Jeimer Candelario at third base and Jonathan India at second base, while Elly De La Cruz would maintain his role at shortstop.

McLain made an impressive debut for the Reds during the 2023 season, living up to expectations by batting .290 over 365 at-bats and hitting 16 home runs, contributing to the team’s 82-80 finish.

Selected by the Reds in the first round of the 2021 draft from UCLA, McLain showcased his versatility by driving in 50 runs, stealing 14 bases, and maintaining a solid .357 on-base percentage in 2023.

Despite these setbacks, Cincinnati is scheduled to kick off their season against the Washington Nationals on March 28.
