The New York Yankees may face tough competition in acquiring one of the top free-agent pitchers remaining on the market. Following the loss of ace Gerrit Cole to an elbow injury for at least a month or two, the Yankees have been associated with numerous available pitchers.
However, due to their substantial payroll, they are unlikely to pursue high-priced options like Jordan Montgomery, as it would result in a significant tax burden for the club. Cheaper alternatives are being considered, with 2023 All-Star Michael Lorenzen frequently mentioned as a potential addition. Lorenzen, aged 32, posted a 4.18 ERA last season with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, making him a valuable asset.
Nevertheless, the Yankees face stiff competition, with the New York Mets also expressing interest in Lorenzen, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald. Both New York teams pursued Yoshinobu Yamamoto after the 2023 season but lost out to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lorenzen remains a target for multiple teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, making his eventual destination uncertain. With Opening Day approaching, it’s expected that he will make a decision soon.
