The Reds have traded minor league righty Chris McElvain to the Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Santiago Espinal, as confirmed by both teams. Cincinnati, which currently has a full 40-man roster, has not disclosed the corresponding move yet.
The timing of acquiring an infielder so close to Opening Day likely wasn’t in the Reds’ original plans. Throughout the offseason, it appeared more probable that their surplus of infielders would lead to a trade. However, recent developments have shifted priorities. With top prospect Noelvi Marte suspended and Matt McLain’s injury, the need for infield depth has become more pressing.
Manager David Bell stated that McLain won’t be ready for the start of the season, leaving his return uncertain. The possibility of surgery has been mentioned, pending a second opinion. Given these circumstances, the Reds’ acquisition of Espinal suggests they don’t expect McLain back soon. Meanwhile, they add Espinal as a versatile defender capable of playing multiple infield positions.
Espinal, known for his strong defensive skills, had a standout first half in 2022 but has generally been considered more of a utility player than a regular starter. He provides solid contact at the plate but lacks power. With minor league options remaining, the Reds can assign him to Triple-A if needed, though the trade indicates they likely plan to have him on the major league roster.
In return, the Blue Jays shed some payroll by moving Espinal, allowing them to make room for infielder Ernie Clement on the Opening Day roster. They also acquire McElvain, a pitching prospect who will join their lower-level system. Despite his decent performance in A-ball last season, McElvain wasn’t ranked among the Reds’ top prospects.
