It became apparent that Mac Jones’ tenure with the New England Patriots was winding down after he found himself benched several times during the 2023 season in favor of Bailey Zappe. Following three underwhelming seasons during which he recorded 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round pick on the first day of free agency. Both parties agreed that this move was in their best interests.
Jones had a promising rookie year, earning a Pro Bowl selection after throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. However, his performance declined over the next two seasons, struggling to maintain consistency under offensive play-caller Matt Patricia in 2022 and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien in the following season.
Throughout his time as the Patriots’ starter, Jones managed an 18-24 record, throwing for 8,918 yards with a completion rate of 66.1% and a passer rating of 85.8. In Jacksonville, he is anticipated to vie with C.J. Beathard and Nathan Rourke for the backup position behind Trevor Lawrence.
Conversely, the Patriots recently signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year contract and are expected to select Jones’ successor with the third overall pick in the upcoming draft.
