BREAKING NEWS: Cincinnati Reds manager said top key man will have his shoulder evaluated

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Matt McLain (9) takes batting practice during spring training workouts, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at the team’s spring training facility in Goodyear, Ariz.

David Bell, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, mentioned that Matt McLain’s shoulder will undergo evaluation on Monday, according to Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer. The Reds are prepared for the potential absence of another important player for the start of the season. Bell had previously stated that the club is exploring all possibilities, including surgery, for McLain’s non-throwing shoulder, which he reported feeling soreness in after a dive during a workout.

Matt McLain Will Not Start the Season on Time

Bell expressed his belief that McLain is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, stating, “I think it’s safe to say he’s not going to start the year on time.” He emphasized that until McLain receives a second opinion, the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain. Consequently, the team is preparing to begin the season without him.

To address the infield concerns resulting from McLain’s situation, the Reds swiftly traded for utility infielder Santiago Espinal from the Toronto Blue Jays. President of baseball operations Nick Krall noted the versatility and value Espinal brings, citing his past All-Star performance and ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base. Krall highlighted Espinal’s capability to serve as a reliable utility infielder who can provide rest days for other players across various positions.

McLain Showed Plenty of Potential in 2023

McLain burst onto the major league scene in 2023, showcasing his promising potential. He boasted an impressive batting average of .290, along with a solid on-base percentage of .357 and a slugging percentage of .507. Additionally, he demonstrated power with 16 home runs, 23 doubles, and four triples, while also showcasing speed with 14 stolen bases. Despite striking out in 28.5% of his plate appearances, he showed patience by walking 7.7% of the time.

Initially drafted as a shortstop, McLain adapted to playing both middle infield positions. Given the presence of Elly De La Cruz at shortstop, it’s likely McLain will focus on second base. The Reds already possess depth in the infield, including Jeimer Candelario, who signed a three-year deal in the offseason. However, Noelvi Marte’s 8-game suspension has created some scarcity in the infield, and how playing time is distributed across the diamond may be influenced by McLain’s absence.
