Despite Jared Goff’s notable performance over the past season and a half with the Detroit Lions, there’s a suggestion that it’s time for the team to consider the future. In a recent 2024 NFL mock draft by Seahawks Wire, Tim Weaver anticipates the Lions picking Michael Penix Jr. at No. 29 overall as Goff’s potential successor.
While this viewpoint represents only one perspective, Penix’s impressive display at the combine and the Washington Huskies pro day, featuring a sub-4.6 second 40-yard dash and a 75-yard completion, has bolstered his position as a top quarterback prospect.
“Following his combine performance, it’s improbable that Michael Penix will remain available beyond Day 1,” writes Tim Weaver. “Detroit takes action at this juncture, ultimately providing them with a successor to Jared Goff. Penix’s integration into Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme could yield something remarkable.”
While the notion of the Detroit Lions drafting a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr. in the first round is intriguing, it seems improbable given the current stance of the organization. General Manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have consistently voiced their confidence in Jared Goff as the team’s leader, stressing that extending his contract is a priority.
Considering this, it’s challenging to envision the Lions straying from their commitment to Goff by investing a high draft pick in a quarterback, particularly Penix, whom some analysts consider a potential disappointment in the NFL. Given the team’s direction and public statements, selecting a quarterback early in the draft doesn’t align with the Lions’ strategic approach.
We extend our best wishes to Michael Penix Jr. for his future endeavors, but given the Lions’ dedication to Goff, this scenario remains speculative and unlikely to come to fruition. As the Lions gear up for the 2024 NFL season, their emphasis seems to be on bolstering the team around Goff rather than seeking his replacement through the draft.
