The NFL community was shaken recently by the news that Kirk Cousins, the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, would be departing the team to join the Atlanta Falcons in free agency. This move marked a significant acquisition for the Falcons, securing their strongest quarterback since the days of Matt Ryan. For Cousins, it presented an opportunity to rejuvenate his career following a devastating Achilles injury last season, which not only cut his campaign short but also dashed the Vikings’ hopes of making it to the postseason.
During a recent appearance on The Big Podcast with NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal, Cousins shared his sincere message to Atlanta fans in the wake of this surprising decision.
“I want them to understand that I’m fully dedicated to doing whatever it takes to lead us to a championship,” Cousins conveyed via The Big Podcast on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Every day, I wake up with the mindset of a champion. Like today, driving to Flowery Branch for rehab, it’s a year-round commitment. My focus is solely on what we need to achieve a world championship. And I envision Atlanta as my final destination. No disrespect, but I don’t want to hop around teams like the Suns or the Celtics toward the end of my career. I aim to conclude my journey here, akin to finishing with the Heat, if you will, and calling it a career.”
These remarks alluded to O’Neal’s own experiences as a journeyman player towards the end of his basketball career, a fate that Cousins hopes to avoid in his NFL journey.
Furthermore, Cousins elaborated on the importance of family in influencing his decision-making process.
“My sons are six and five years old. They won’t recall my time in Washington or even remember much about my tenure in Minnesota. However, they will remember that I played for the Falcons. I want those memories to be cherished, so I see this as my opportunity to finish my career on a high note,” Cousins explained.
