Giancarlo Stanton, the outfielder/designated hitter for the New York Yankees, has encountered significant challenges at the outset of the 2024 season. Despite missing 61 games last season, there was optimism surrounding Stanton’s potential resurgence this year. However, he has yet to demonstrate a return to his previous level of performance.
Stanton has slumped out the gate in the early going
Stanton’s performance in the five games played this season is underwhelming, as he has only managed a batting average of .150, with one home run and one RBI, resulting in a low .540 OPS. Additionally, he has struck out 11 times in 20 at-bats. Given the New York Yankees’ aspirations for a potential World Series, they will heavily rely on Stanton, one of their key hitters, to regain his form and contribute significantly.
Stanton’s struggles are prolonged and concerning
Stanton’s difficulties extend beyond the current season, as his performance since the latter half of the 2022 season has been disappointing. Over 140 games during this period, he has maintained a batting average of just .180, with 32 home runs, 78 RBIs, and a .663 OPS. Additionally, Stanton has struck out in 186 of his 510 at-bats. This prolonged slump, spanning almost two years, may indicate a concerning trend both for Stanton individually and for the New York Yankees as a team.

Slugger’s contract situation is less than favorable for the Yankees
New York Yankees are increasingly troubled by Stanton’s contract situation. With $32 million owed this season and the next, and a commitment of at least $25 million until his age-37 season in 2027, his contract poses a significant financial burden. The club holds a contract option for 2028, leaving trade as the sole viable option to alleviate this potential financial burden. However, Stanton’s declining productivity renders his contract nearly unmovable.
Though it’s still early in the season, Stanton’s performance has largely mirrored his recent struggles. While he possesses the capability to reclaim his former dominance, the Yankees are under pressure for this turnaround to occur promptly. This urgency is intensified by their recent acquisition of Juan Soto, underscoring the need to maximize their championship potential within the current window.
