With just one week remaining in the regular season, the Celtics have finally secured their 15th player.
The team has revealed that they’ve enlisted Neemias Queta for the remainder of the season, granting him eligibility for postseason games. Reports from MassLive’s Brian Robb indicate that it’s a multi-year deal, while HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto adds that there’s a team option for the 2024-2025 season.
Queta, who was released by Sacramento after an impressive season with their Stockton affiliate, was signed to a two-way contract by President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens early last fall. He contributed significantly during the early stages of the regular season, particularly during a strong showing on a December trip to the west coast when the team’s frontcourt was dealing with injuries. In 26 games, the Portuguese player has averaged 4.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in 11.4 minutes per game.
It remains uncertain whether Queta has played his last game for Boston’s G-League affiliate. With Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis both listed as questionable for tonight’s game in Milwaukee, there might be an opportunity for Queta to gain valuable experience with the main team. However, the organization might also opt to let him finish what he started in Maine.
In Maine, Queta has excelled as an agile defender and runner, playing a significant role in their journey to the Finals. He’s posted averages of 14.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.9 blocks in eight games, including standout performances of 16 and 19 points in the Eastern Conference Final win on Sunday. The Maine Celtics are set to host the Oklahoma City Blue in Game 1 of a best-of-three series tonight.
Two weeks ago, Queta mentioned to CelticsBlog’s Noa Dalzell and Bobby Manning that there hadn’t been discussions about a new deal with the team. “I’m just focused on doing my job,” Queta stated. “If they decide to offer me a contract, that’s great. If not, I can accept that too. I’ve been fulfilling my responsibilities throughout the year, and that’s where things stand.”
Queta now finds himself as the fifth big in the rotation following the acquisition of Xavier Tillman Sr. at the trade deadline, but this move could signify a long-term opportunity for the center. Similar paths were taken by Maine alumni Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet, who started as late additions but eventually secured established roles with the team.
