Former Dolphins Starter Sign With Steelers in Free Agency

Former Miami Dolphins starter Connor Williams is currently without a team as he explores options for his next football destination. Initially part of the Dallas Cowboys, Williams transitioned to the Miami Dolphins for the past two seasons as an offensive lineman. Zack Cook from Sports Grid anticipates that Williams might join the Pittsburgh Steelers during the free agency period.

Injuries have posed significant challenges for Williams in recent times, affecting his ability to secure a new team despite his evident skill. While he only participated in nine games during the 2023 season, he had a more substantial presence in 2022 with the Dolphins, featuring in 17 games and starting in all of them. Over the past four seasons, he has managed to play in at least 16 games for most of them, highlighting his durability when not hindered by injuries.

Williams Expected to Take His Time

Williams suffered an ACL tear in December 2023 while playing for the Miami Dolphins, casting doubt on his availability for the commencement of the 2024 season. This injury has left teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers waiting to hear about his decision regarding his future.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, discussed their approach on “The Joe Rose Show” in February, emphasizing a careful and deliberate decision-making process.

“We plan to proceed cautiously and thoughtfully regarding contract negotiations,” Rosenhaus stated. “Much of our decision-making will hinge on Connor’s physical condition. He may not immediately sign with a team at the onset of free agency, as his physical well-being will play a significant role in the timing of his decision.”

Rosenhaus highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Williams’ situation, indicating that it may not be resolved as swiftly as some other players they represent. They intend to assess the situation day by day once the offseason begins.

Williams Fits an Area of Need for the Steelers

Heading into the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a pressing need at the center position. They cleared approximately $5 million in cap space by releasing Mason Cole, but this move left them with a void at center.

Connor Williams emerges as a promising solution for the Steelers, offering above-average performance at the center position. In 2023, he earned an impressive Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 86.5 while playing for the Miami Dolphins. Despite allowing only one sack on 497 snaps, Williams was flagged for penalties seven times, ranking sixth highest in the NFL in this regard.

Joe Kuzma of Steel City Underground emphasized the significance of the center position in a March 26 article, identifying it as one of the team’s top four needs. With the arrival of two new quarterbacks, the center’s role becomes even more crucial, as they are typically responsible for coordinating plays and ensuring smooth snaps. This importance is amplified under the guidance of first-year offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Kuzma suggests that the Steelers may explore both free agency and the draft to address this position.

A potential reunion between Williams and the Dolphins seems unlikely, as the Dolphins secured Aaron Brewer earlier in the offseason to fill the center role.

Spotrac estimates Williams’ market value at $13.5 million, which is substantial. However, given his standing as the second-highest graded center by PFF, the investment might be justified for a team seeking stability and quality at the position.
