The global expectation was that Sean Payton would acquire Taysom Hill following his move to the Denver Broncos. This anticipation stemmed from Payton’s seemingly unwarranted admiration for the versatile player, who has been utilized as a quarterback, tight end, and special teams asset by the New Orleans Saints. Despite the lucrative four-year, $40 million contract Payton awarded Hill while still with the Saints, a trade has not materialized.

However, Hill’s time with the Saints may be drawing to a close. During a recent NFL owner’s meeting, head coach Dennis Allen appeared noncommittal when questioned about the possibility of a trade involving Hill.

When asked about the potential trade, Allen responded, “No, that discussion hasn’t been initiated. It seems like Sean has attempted to persuade everyone to join him in Denver, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Dennis Allen: “We’ll See” If Taysom Hill Trade Happens

It’s worth noting that Allen chuckled before giving that response, and his mention of Payton trading for every Saint is clearly hyperbolic, so it’s important to take the statement with a grain of salt. However, every joke contains a kernel of truth, and a Taysom Hill trade would indeed make sense for New Orleans.

For Saints coach Dennis Allen, players' decision to score late vs. Atlanta was no mutiny

As of now, Hill carries a hefty $15.79 million cap hit, which is significant for any team but especially concerning for the cap-strapped Saints. New Orleans perennially faces challenges with salary cap management, and they stand to gain much-needed breathing room by releasing Hill after June 1st, clearing up to $10 million in cap space.

While the Broncos are undoubtedly the primary suitor, they won’t be the sole team interested in a potential Taysom Hill trade. Even if it only results in a late-round pick exchange, several teams should have at least a passing interest in acquiring the versatile offensive weapon.

Other Possible Trade Destinations

Denver Broncos

While Sean Payton’s presence is undoubtedly a significant factor, a Taysom Hill trade could genuinely bolster the Broncos’ roster. With the recent release of Russell Wilson, the team finds itself in need of a quarterback and lacks the resources to acquire an elite prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. Given Payton’s faith in Hill’s abilities, the veteran could serve as a short-term bridge option if paired with a second-round quarterback like Bo Nix.

Lamar Jackson stands as one of the premier quarterbacks in football, yet the reigning MVP could benefit from a stronger backup option. Taysom Hill’s athleticism makes him well-suited to operate within the Ravens’ scheme for short periods, offering versatility and depth. Moreover, a trade for Hill could provide the Ravens with insurance at the tight end position, crucial in their tight end-centric offensive approach. Given Baltimore’s heavy reliance on tight ends, having a backup plan in case of injuries to key players like Mark Andrews or Isaiah Likely could prove invaluable.

San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy is considered a franchise quarterback, but Josh Dobbs may not be the ideal backup option. While Dobbs showed promise at times last season, he ultimately lost the starting job to Nick Mullens and Jarren Hall. The 49ers, being well aware of the significance of a reliable backup quarterback, could benefit from a Taysom Hill trade. Under the guidance of innovative coach Kyle Shanahan, Hill’s versatility could be maximized, whether utilized as a quarterback or tight end. His skill set could wreak havoc in various sub packages, adding another dimension to the team’s offense.

Philadelphia Eagles

If Kenny Pickett is seen as the solution, then perhaps the question being asked is misguided. Pickett’s athletic abilities are not on par with what’s needed to substitute for Jalen Hurts, and his processing speed and arm strength may not meet the requirements for success in the pocket. In contrast, Taysom Hill could provide a closer approximation of Hurts’ athleticism, which alone could justify pursuing a trade.

Los Angeles Chargers

Greg Roman’s affinity for the tight end position is well-known, and the current lackluster depth chart at tight end could provide justification for pursuing a Taysom Hill trade. The Chargers currently boast one of the weakest collections of skill position players in the league, and Hill could potentially receive significant targets within this offense. While he may never supplant Justin Herbert as the starting quarterback, Hill could still see action if Herbert were to suffer another injury. While Easton Stick performed adequately last year, Hill’s athleticism could present a unique challenge for opposing defenses and add an additional dynamic to the Chargers’ offensive strategy.
