Kyle McCord said the Ohio State Buckeyes staff was going one way and he accordingly went the other way

McCord elaborated in a podcast that the direction the Ohio State staff was heading influenced his decision to pursue a different path.

McCord provided additional insight into his decision in a January article from the Columbus Dispatch. Although not explicitly instructed to enter the transfer portal, the message conveyed by the Ohio State staff was unmistakable. Given that McCord was entering his senior season, the prospect of seeking a new quarterback while he remained in his final year essentially signaled to him that his opportunities for significant playing time in the remainder of his college career were minimal.

Kyle McCord was a serviceable quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes, but he couldn’t win the big one

Although McCord showcased quarterback skills that many college football teams would eagerly embrace, he couldn’t secure the victory most coveted by the Ohio State Buckeyes: a win against their archrival, the Michigan Wolverines.

Throughout the season, McCord accumulated 3,170 passing yards and 24 touchdowns with only six interceptions, boasting a completion rate of 65.8%. His adeptness at distributing the ball to his playmakers while minimizing turnovers propelled the Buckeyes to an undefeated record leading up to the clash in Ann Arbor. However, McCord’s cautious approach ultimately contributed to the Buckeyes’ narrow defeat in the season’s final game.

Despite not posting flashy statistics early on, McCord demonstrated his potential, notably with a crucial completion on third and 19 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, culminating in a game-winning touchdown.

While the specifics surrounding McCord’s decision to enter the transfer portal remain a matter of conflicting accounts, numerous Ohio State fans continue to criticize him, alleging that he opted to evade competition.

While McCord could have vied for the starting position, he likely gauged his prospects realistically. If he perceived the coaching staff’s trajectory differently, remaining with the Buckeyes could have jeopardized his NFL aspirations.

Freshman Focus: Kyle McCord - Land-Grant Holy Land

Some Ohio State fans contend that McCord sought an assurance of being named the starter in 2024, and when head coach Ryan Day couldn’t provide that guarantee, McCord chose to explore other options by entering the transfer portal. Nevertheless, McCord has now shifted his focus to Syracuse, aiming to maximize the remainder of his collegiate career.
