The Houston Astros quickly brought back Miguel Díaz, signing him to a minor-league contract just four days after designating him for assignment. He’s now assigned to Triple-A Sugar Land, currently playing in Albuquerque. The Astros, struggling with a 4-10 record, are in dire need of bullpen support following rough outings in Kansas City.
In Wednesday’s game, rookie Spencer Arrighetti struggled through three innings in his MLB debut, and Hunter Brown didn’t fare any better, getting hit hard by the Royals. Díaz missed these struggles, having been designated for assignment on Monday, shortly after the Astros claimed him off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Despite pitching a scoreless inning against Texas on April 5, he found himself DFA’ed once again, opting for free agency after being outrighted to Sugar Land.
Díaz has been in the majors since 2017, initially with the San Diego Padres before joining the Tigers for the past two seasons. Although not a full-time player, his career stats include a 6-2 record with a 4.81 ERA, along with 132 strikeouts and 64 walks in 88 appearances. With his return on a minor-league deal, the Astros must make roster adjustments to potentially bring him back to the majors.
